Motorists warned against using defective tyres 8 Years, 7 Months ago
There has been a considerable rise in the number of people driving on defective tyres, caravanners have been warned.

Statistics from 2008 supplied by courts in England and Wales show the number of successful prosecutions has increased by 14 per cent - a seven-year high.

"Many drivers have the misconception that the police are too busy or too stretched to stop and prosecute them for driving on illegal tyres," noted Stuart Jackson, chairman of TyreSafe.

However, he acknowledged that this is not the case, with driving on sub-standard tyres considered a "very serious offence" by police across the country.

Motorists are reminded that the legal minimum required tyre tread depth is 1.6 millimetres, with those who fail to comply facing a £2,500 fine and three penalty points for each defective tyre.

Experts recommend that tyres are checked frequently to ensure they comply with the legal required standard.
